A: AI slop refers to AI-generated content that is technically coherent but substantively empty — fluent-sounding filler that uses correct grammar and full sentences to say very little. It sounds plausible, reads smoothly, and often contains no useful, specific, or accurate information. It’s the product of AI tools being used to generate volume without adequate human review, expertise, or specificity.
What “AI Slop” Actually Means
AI slop is content that answers questions with information that sounds plausible but is vague, generic, or in some cases simply wrong. You’ve almost certainly read it. A job posting that describes every role as requiring “a passion for excellence.” A company FAQ that answers every question with a version of “please contact our support team.” An employee handbook section that explains a policy in language so broad it doesn’t actually explain anything.
The tells are fairly consistent: a kind of smooth, earnest vagueness — phrases like “in today’s rapidly evolving landscape,” “it’s more important than ever,” and “let’s dive in.” It feels like it was written by someone who has read a lot of content but doesn’t actually know what they’re talking about.
The problem isn’t that AI was used. The problem is that the output wasn’t reviewed, refined, or grounded in real expertise before it went out.

As AI tools have become widely accessible, the volume of AI-generated content has increased significantly. Readers — job seekers, employees, compliance auditors, prospective clients — are getting better at recognizing it. AI slop carries three specific organizational risks that HR leaders should track.
Reputational risk. Content that reads as low-effort or imprecise signals that an organization isn’t paying attention. For companies trying to attract and retain talent in a competitive market, this is a real cost that shows up in application rates and offer acceptance.
Compliance risk. Imprecise language in policy documentation is not a minor aesthetic problem. Ambiguous leave policies, unclear accommodation procedures, and loosely-worded conduct standards create exposure. How to Use AI Without Producing Slop
AI tools are useful. The goal isn’t to stop using them — it’s to use them in a way that produces content worth reading.
Start with your own expertise, not a blank prompt. AI tools produce better output when given real, specific input. Start with what you actually know about the policy, the role, or the situation, then use AI to help you structure and refine it — not to generate the substance from nothing.
Review output with the end reader in mind. Ask yourself: if an employee read this to answer a real question about their situation, would they get a real answer? If the answer is no, the draft isn’t finished.
Run a specificity check. Look for phrases that could appear in any document about any company in any industry. Those are the passages that need to be replaced with language specific to your organization, your policies, and your people.
Assign human ownership. AI-generated content that no specific person has reviewed and taken responsibility for is how slop makes it out the door. Build a review step into the process, and make sure the reviewer has enough context to catch what’s generic or inaccurate.
